Every Statement of Purpose is different. Each essay is supposed to be individualistic in nature and no one can actually give you a recipe of a great SOP. What works for one individual might not work for another. However, here are some tips and tricks using which you can curate a compelling SOP.
You need a "hook"
Whenever you are writing a statement of purpose make sure you don’t state the obvious information that the university may already have. Make your paragraph interesting and compelling. Tell them about yourself and add a human touch because they have gone through innumerable applications with the same re-used sentences like ‘I am really hard working or how I am a perfect fit for this course of the university’. Be unique and original.
Be introspective.
If you simply mention that you love a particular university or program or course and how you are going to be a great fit there, it is going to sound very boring. Instead make it about yourself, tell them how and why you love that particular field.
Write a story or incident
Attaching a story or an incident that made you choose that particular course can definitely attract a lot of attention. Generally, when the professors go through SOPs, they tend to remember the story or incident because it is more than just a casual statement.
It gives you an upper edge and makes you stand out from the crowd
Explore the faculty and research projects in the university you are applying to.
Usually, Universities abroad are working on some or the other research project. It would help to find out if you can relate to any of the projects. Linking your SOP with an ongoing research would always be a great add.
